CALL TO ORDER: Commodore Yates called the meeting to order in the Clubhouse at 1935 hours.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Vice Commodore McGillin led the general membership in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
SENIOR MEMBER RECOGNITION: Rear Commodore Roberts recognized Captain Dennis Grendahl as the senior member in attendance.
READING OF THE MINUTES: Secretary Wood read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read.
CORRESPONDENCE: The Secretary read a letter of withdrawal from Captain James Sleeth, which was approved by the membership. He read a thank you card from SPC Scott Yates and his unit in Iraq on behalf of the gifts the Club sent earlier in the year; Commodore Yates reported that his son was now safely back home.
APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: Applications from Captains Ryan Garvie, Ronald Voegeli, Douglas Scott, Arne Svendsen, and Kim Bowden were read. Captains Scott and Bowden were present and recognized.
COMMODORE: Commodore Yates reported on a successful Tarette Steak Fry/Entertainment Night, and reminded attendees of the upcoming Stimson Race and the October 6 Commodore’s Ball. He awarded a Screw-up flag to Captain John Steckler for his generator running without him being on board – Captain Steckler claimed it was “magic.”
The Commodore thanked by name the Junior Officers, Board and Board Chairman, many of the Committee Chairs, and others for their help during the past year. (Note: He omitted the Outstation Chairman, but gratuitously called out the Outstation Chairman’s wife.)
The Commodore presented special awards to Kathy Fish for her help with the Club Calendar and the Annual, and to Dock Chairman Dave Svendsen for his work. The Commodore’s Trophy went to Captains Bruce Ramon and Gary Stone for their work on the Moorage Committee and 520 Committee, respectively. The Man of the Year award went to Chaplain Ken Klett in recognition of his long-time role in what is often a difficult position.
The Commodore thanked his wife Crystal for her help and support from the first Junior Officer’s ball – on, and thanked all members for their support and participation. He then turned the meeting over to P/C Dave Krows for the Change of Watch ceremony.
CHANGE OF WATCH: P/C Dave Krows presided over the decommissioning of the 92nd Bridge and commissioning of the 93rd Bridge. He was assisted by P/C Dick Timmerman and P/C Russ Oberg, along with P/C Daryl Anhalt as Marshall. Following the Commissioning ceremony, P/C Jeff Ewell presented Commodore McGillin with the 46th hand-made gavel, and P/C Krows presented P/C Yates with his P/C flag along with a plaque in recognition of his contributions to the Club. Cammy Mowry and Susie Roberts presented Crystal Yates with a pendant in appreciation for her work the past several years.
COMMODORE: Newly-installed Commodore McGillin thanked his wife Cammy, Officers and their spouses, Board members, and others for their support, and summarized his goals for the year. He noted the upcoming Friday Night Social, and reported that at the October 10 meeting as many as 15 new members may be initiated, and that members will be voting on a new Board member.
VICE-COMMODORE: Vice Commodore Roberts noted that he walked into the Club 51 years ago, at age 4, but (magically) he claims to be only 54 years old. The following ‘07-’08 Chairmen were announced: House – Jim Damery, Club Manager – Jess Hill, Moorage – P/C Scott Grimm, Docks – Randy Garvie, and Outstation, Eric Wood.
REAR-COMMODORE: Rear Commodore Jennerich reported that in ’07-’08 Security would be headed by Dick Geving, Membership by Mark LaFountaine, and Grounds by Linda Roehl. He further reported that there were 42 participants at last week’s grounds work party.
FLEET CAPTAIN: Captain Paul Grimm reported that the first major event of the season would be the November UW vs. Hawaii luau.
FLEET CHAPLAIN: Chaplain Ken Klett conducted an 8-bell ceremony on behalf of Captain Joe Benyon, who passed away July 18 at age 80.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
REGATTA POWER: Captain Bob Lindal reported results from the Stimson Race, and presented hardware on behalf of winners P/Cs Lynn Montgomery and Dean Lentgis, and Captains Bill Anderson and Dave Padgett. The next race will be in Tacoma.
CLUB MANAGER: Captain Jess Hill reported that “Benyon Cruisers” would be served in honor of Captain Joe Benyon during the upcoming “Closing Day” event.
OTHER REPORTS:
Captain Jim Damery reported results of the Fishing Derby, won by Captain Dave Nelson’s cousin. He also thanked P/C Dick Timmerman for the blocks which display reciprocal club flags in the main station.
Membership Chairman Mark LaFountaine thanked members for their work, and noted that initiations would be on October 10.
Captain Al Reiche described events scheduled for “Closing Day” on Saturday, September 29. A parade, with King Captain Nick Castro, begins at 1PM Saturday in the parking lot, and barbecued ribs and chicken will be served at about 5 PM.
Captain Mark Vanderwall described the October 27 Steak, Scotch, and Cigar Night event, which will be two-tiered – dinner at 6 and sampling of five top shelf scotches at 7:30.
P/C Scott Grimm, on behalf of the Nominating Committee, reported that P/C Rich McCroskey has been nominated to fill a Board of Trustees vacancy. Nominations from the floor will be accepted at the next General Members meeting, and voting will be on October 10.
OLD BUSINESS: None.
NEW BUSINESS: Captain Jerry Zuvich presented to the Secretary a document in support of the proposal to eliminate the Architectural Advisory Committee, to be included in the mailing of the proposal to members. He submitted a note, read by the Secretary, in which it was requested that no money be spent on AAC-approved projects until the bylaw change is voted on by the membership.
RECEPTION: R/C Roberts again recognized Captain Dennis Grendahl as the senior member in attendance and Captain Jim Hess as the junior member in attendance. 70 members were present, along with several guests. 10 Past Commodores were present and recognized.
QUARTER POT: Captain Judith Pippen pulled for Friday lunches and quarter pot. Captains Jeff Madera and Kyle Bixby won Friday lunches, and Captain Al Smith won the quarter pot, which he donated to the Club.
